About USS Perch (SS-176):

The Founder's Grandfather, CMDR B.R. VanBuskirk was the Executive Officer and engineer of the porpoise class submarine. After assisting with the evacuation of Manila and narrowly escaping port during its occupation by Japanese forces during World War II they set out on patrol in the Java sea. The vessel was extensively damaged during an encounter with three Japanese destroyers on 3 March 1942. Several attempts were made to repair the vessel, but were hindered by the nearby Japanese destroyers searching for them. With one engine out of commission, the other running at reduced capacity, and weapons systems rendered nonoperational, Captain D. Hurt made the hard decision to scuttle the vessel. All hands safely evacuated the ship and were captured by the Japanese Navy. During their time in internment 5 passed from undernourishment. The crew was liberated in 1945 at the end of the war. For a time there was a television series entitled "The Silent Service", during which the Perch was one of the vessels featured. The Founder's grandfather was a guest speaker.
